Thursday
Welcome to Today's Episode of:
The Workshop Sessions
Today we will learn:
How to Mutilate a Brush using the Lathe Machine
Step 1: Turn on lathe machine.
Step 2: Look busy, work on workpiece. How specifically is not important.
Step 3: Generate lots of swarf. Ensure spindle is moving, preferably with great pace.
Step 4: In an attempt to remove swarf, jab brush (hereinafter referred to as 'victim') at swarf.
Step 5: Follow through until victim makes contact with chuck.
Step 6: After enough tension has been generated, yank victim away from spindle with force.
Step 7: Repeate Steps 3-7 until desired result is achieved.
Viola! Within seconds, the bristles of your brush would be totally mutilated. This is caused by the trapping of the bristles in the swarf, the cutting of the bristles by the burrs, as well as the twisting of the brush by the spinning spindle.
(We would like to thank Mr Tang from the NYP Workshop for his magnificant demonstration of the above during class today.)

In Commemoration:
Where Were You (Earthquake/Tsunami Special)
Where were you when the world stopped turning that December day
Out in the yard with your wife and children
Working on some stage on the way
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of
Those large waves rising against that blue sky
Did you shout out in anger
In fear for your neighbour
Or did you just sit down and cry
Did you weep for the children
Who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below
Did you burst out in pride
For the brave unknown few
The heroes who died just doing what they do
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself to what really matters
I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNA but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, Hope and Love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is Love
Where were you when the world stopped turning that December day
Teaching a class full of innocent children
Driving down some cold interstate
Did you feel guilty 'cause you're a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her
Did you dust off that Bible at home
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Speak with some stranger on the street
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watching
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some stranger
Stand in line and give your own blood
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love
I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNA but I'm not sure I can tell you

Friday
Secret of Success = John Forbes Nash + Jason Bourne
Yesterday after school, I went down to COGS for some Christmas Dinner. Played some games (of course, I was way late so I only caught the last like 10 minutes...) before making our way to Orchard Marche with fellow crappers Josh and Ben (read: Do You Ramli?). After a slight fracas at Somerset MRT because of waiting under the No Waiting sign, we finally arrived at Marche. Underneath the Marche sign was a Movenpick sign. I wonder what this means; perhaps it means 'Move 'n' Pick'...
But I digress. We finally settled down and got our food. I ate 2 rostis, as well as some leftover mashed potatoes. Drank water from the tap. Literally. But I digress. Just about the middle of my second rosti, my table started playing Truth or Dare. After loads and loads of rounds, and loads and loads of crazy dares (read: Josh singing Gaudete across the partitioned area - and that was considered mild), everybody kena...except me and Ian. Fair enough, Ian said he was lucky. I on the other hand, don't trust luck. No, I escaped due to the particularly deadly mix of mathematics and psychology. Unlike, dear me, poor Isabel, who kena 4 times, several in a row if I got my facts right.
So, naturally, when we went out into the night, both of us were highly targeted, in particular by Beatrice's foam spray. However, I managed to escape yet again, while Ian was badly hit. For this particular situation, I relied yet again on Mathematics, in particular the usage of Geometry. However, when the number of sprays increased, I had to increase my arsenal to include stealth and speed. So, in short, the whole bunch of them just kept spraying each other, while I just watched from the sidelines. This continued until we reached Orchard MRT. Once there, Ben spotted me in the distance, unarmed and innocent-looking, and most importantly - clean. So he called up Josh and made his way towards me. I gave them a 'no-no' fingerwag, but they ignored it...and that's when the adventure began.
I made for the station when they both lost concentration at the same time, then made for the far exit, then made a sweeping curve around the pavement, eventually ending up on the other side of the pavement while they gave up on me and continued attacking their other attackers. I continued watching from the distance. Then...I was spotted. Michelle saw me. I saw her lips move. "Alvin's there..." Not that I didn't trust her, but as the saying goes, "All's Fair in Love and War." And this was war.
I made new calculations for a new route, making sure there was no room for a surprise attack behind me. Then I ran for it, finding a cove behind a CCIS tent. Then I recalculated the rest of my route. I climbed the low wall and made across the grass patch towards the rear of the station. Then I slowly and silently went down the stairs and took a seat in the distance as I continued watching them fight it out beneath me.
Eventually, they went into the underpass to cross the road. I followed behind warily. This was no time to let my guard down. Finally went up back to road level, and there was a stage. So we stood there to watch. Then I realised I was standing next to Doc, and he said, "Hey, you're clean, that's not fair."
Well, guess what...it was.

Sunday
Why?
Why is it so difficult for me to compliment somebody? Why is it so hard for me to say something nice like "I think you look cool with those specs"? It's just a simple phrase, and I can make a mess out of it, so many chances to say it and I just...stone. I mean you have people like Crawldaddy who can make outlandish compliments to people like Jason or Mr Hee Kiah or Ms Jie Hong, whom they have met for like 5 months, and I can't even say something nice to someone I know for 5 and a half years. It is an illness, I tell you...an ILLNESS!
Or maybe I'm just shy.
But wait, that's an illness too...

I wanna watch Ocean's Twelve.
I mean, Eleven was absolutely cool, smooth, and it was kinda funny too. Now, the reviews say Twelve is EVEN FUNNIER than Eleven. This I gotta watch. Thing is, school's starting next week, and I also wanna avoid the Christmas and New Year crowd. For all you know, I'll just have to wait for the DVD...

Monday
First and foremost, thanks for all your prayers, the operation was fine. Of course, post-operation was more painful than the earlier one, but this was expected, because this one had a slight incision before they (WARNING: The following description is graphic and may be unsuitable for young children) yanked the pins out of my finger. Oh, and I even had a nice souvenir after the operation - a container containing those 2 pins that were drilled into my bone. At the moment, blood is oozing out of the open wounds, but it should patch itself up after a while. Of course, what that means is that I'm back on medication, so don't be surprised if you see me popping a few pills here and there. I'm NOT on drugs. OK, well techically I am, but I digress.
Oh, and if you're wondering if the surgery would interfere with my performance on Saturday the 18th of December outside Orchard MRT and opposite Wheelock Place at 8:30 pm, don't worry...it should rain. ;)

Friday
BOY do I have NEWS for YOU!
I'll be having surgery to remove those 2 pins in my fingers...NEXT WEEK! Next Monday to be exact. Yeah, I'll finally be able to move that joint, and my finger is well on its way to recovery! Can't wait to get back to goalkeeping :D
School's starting in just about 2 weeks. Just checked my timetable. The load doesn't seem quite as heavy as last semester, but we can only wait and see. Not to mention, I also have my buddy Crawldaddy with me, so he can help me foresee what's going to come, while I foresee what's going to come for him. Ah, the wonders of the flip-flop system.

Thursday
Man, what a blast.
Yesterday went to pack up the Robotics Lab, stuffed everything in sight into cardboard boxes. Oh, and folding and sealing the boxes was cool too. By the end of the day (12:30 pm), we had finished packing close to 33 boxes. So after that, came home for lunch, before packing my banjo to go jam with the SMC guys.
Reached SMC at 2:30pm, and started with a bit of light jamming with Haryanto and Tombro. Eventually, all the guys arrived, the full attendance was me, Haryanto, Tombro, Eric Tan, Simon, David, Andrew, Nicholas, and Matt. Jammed a good lot of songs, including, but not limited to: One Way, Free, Everyday, My Best Friend, Rock of Ages, I Believe, Unto You, Consuming Fire, etc. After that, played footie in the room. It was fun, not competitive at all, but it was really fun, and I finally had some practice on my shooting.
After that, went to play LAN with the guys, they played Warcraft, I played FIFA 2002 with Simon. After that, dinner at PS foodcourt. Then, went to the arcade to look at people play. Then finally we made our way to Matt's house.
Took a good long time trying to get WE8 working, I dropped my banjo with my father and prepared for a good night ahead. Aside from a slight backache from carrying that heavy banjo all through the night, it turned out to be exceptionally enjoyable. Basically, we played WE8 all through the night and the early morning. Scored an absolute screamer with Michael Hughes for Northern Ireland, dribbling from behind the halfway line through the entire Republic of Ireland team. After a few warm-up matches, we played a league. I used Liverpool (naturally), Matt used Chelsea, Simon used Real Madrid, Haryanto used AC Milan, and David used...Leicester City. Basically, due to my style of play, my matches always end up being very exciting to watch. First match, got thrashed by Simon 3-0, then an absolute blockbuster match against Matt. Both keepers were on top of their game, and it seemed destined to be a 0-0. However, we just kept throwing in chance after chance after chance. Eventually, against all odds, Cisse's long piledriver found the back of the net. Then, just minutes after that, Chelsea equalised due to dreadful defending. Then, Liverpool pulled one back again, another piledriver to Cech's near post, but then, in stoppage time, Chelsea equalised yet again. The WE8 match of the day. Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea. Then, a draw against Leicester and a 1-2 loss against AC Milan, and that was the end of the league. League order:
1. AC Milan
2. Real Madrid
3. Chelsea
4. Liverpool
5. Leicester City
So anyway, after that, it was time to watch the Champions League matches. We were channel-hopping between Roma-Madrid and Liverpool-Olympiakos. We eventually settled on the Liverpool match because the Madrid match was...so...slow... The Liverpool match was the exact opposite. It was moving so fast it was hard to keep pace. Had a big blow in the first half. 0-1 down from a Rivaldo free kick, and Monaco scoring goals for fun against Depor. What followed was...I won't say the best comeback, but I'll definitely say it's Liverpool's most important comeback. And what a goal by Gerrard. What a goal.
So, finally after the shock wore off, continued playing WE8 with Haryanto until just about 8 am, then it's off to school time. A bit of breakfast, then it's off to the bus stop. As expected, fell asleep on the bus. Then, fell asleep in the Robotics Lab. This was hilarious. I dozed off on the chair next to the partition, and my head kept knocking the partition. Bonk...bonk...bonk... So anyway, after I woke up, we finally got the rest of the boxes complete. Took QCR home after one last look at the RoboLab. 1 and a half years of robotic success in that little room. Ah well, SAV, HERE WE COME!!!
So anyway, got home, had lunch, then slept at abt 2 pm. Had a nice long deep snooze. Was interrupted halfway by a phone call. My maid was screaming from downstairs, "ALVIN, YOUR PHONE!" and I was like 'Wo0t? Alvin, you're stoned?' Until eventually I got the message I picked up the phone.
"Hey this is Mich, you know the CCIS rite, it's been changed from the 19th to the 18th, so we'll have to meet at 4pm on Saturday, which is when we're supposed to meet anyway so..."
"Uhuh...uhuh...uhuh..."
"...like that, so is that OK?"
"Uh...ya...OK..."
"OK then, bye."
"Uh...ya...bye..."
*puts down phone*
"Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..."
So yah, I was darn tired. In fact, I barely just woke up when I started blogging. So that's about a 5 hour nap. :D

This Side
One day you'll see her and you'll know what I mean.
Take her of leave her she will still be the same.
She'll not try to buy you with her time.
But nothing's the same, as you will see when she's gone.
It's foreign on this side,
And I'll not leave my home again.
There's no place to hide
And I'm nothing but scared.
You dream of colors that have never been made,
You imagine songs that have never been played.
They will try to buy you and your mind.
Only the curious have something to find.
It's foreign on this side,
And the truth is a better friend.
But reasons few have I to go back again.
Your first dawn blinded you, left you cursing the day.
Entrance is crucial and it's not without pain.
There's no path to follow, once you're here.
You'll climb up the slide and then you'll slide down the stairs.
It's foreign on this side,
But it feels like I'm home again.
There's no place to hide
But I don't think I'm scared.

The Phantom of the Opera is here...inside my finger...
Just came back from finger therapy. Because my finger is so bent, I've now got a splint to wear when I sleep. It's off-white, and looks spookily like the mask in the Phantom of the Opera. Great, so now when I sleep I have the Phantom's mask on my finger...
Special Bumper Edition:
Player of the Year nominee: Thierry Henry
