Isaiah 40

30 Even youths grow tired and weary,

and young men stumble and fall;

31 but those who hope in the LORD

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint.

Psalm 139
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

1 O LORD , you have searched me
and you know me.

2 You know when I sit and when I rise;

you perceive my thoughts from afar.

3 You discern my going out and my lying down;

you are familiar with all my ways.

4 Before a word is on my tongue

you know it completely, O LORD .

5 You hem me in-behind and before;

you have laid your hand upon me.

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,

too lofty for me to attain.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;

if I make my bed in the depths, [a] you are there.

9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,

if I settle on the far side of the sea,

10 even there your hand will guide me,

your right hand will hold me fast.

11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me

and the light become night around me,"

12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;

the night will shine like the day,

for darkness is as light to you.

John 16

33b "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Voice of Truth

Oh what I would do to have
The kind of faith it takes
To climb out of this boat I'm in
Onto the crashing waves

To step out of my comfort zone
Into the realm of the unknown where Jesus is
And He's holding out His hand

But the waves are calling out my name
And they laugh at me
Reminding me of all the times
I've tried before and failed
The waves they keep on telling me
Time and time again. "Boy, you'll never win!"
"You'll never win!"

But the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, "Do not be afraid!"
The voice of truth says, "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

Oh what I would do to have
The kind of strength it takes to stand before a giant
With just a sling and a stone
Surrounded by the sound of a thousand warriors
Shaking in their armor
Wishing they'd have had the strength to stand

But the giant's calling out my name
And he laughs at me
Reminding me of all the times
I've tried before and failed
The giant keeps on telling me
Time and time again. "Boy you'll never win!"
"You'll never win!"

But the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, "Do not be afraid!"
The voice of truth says, "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

But the stone was just the right size
To put the giant on the ground
And the waves they don't seem so high
From on top of them lookin' down
I will soar with the wings of eagles
When I stop and listen to the sound of Jesus
Singing over me

And the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, "Do not be afraid!"
The voice of truth says, "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

Psalm 32
Of David. A maskil.

1 Blessed is he
whose transgressions are forgiven,
whose sins are covered.
2 Blessed is the man
whose sin the LORD does not count against him
and in whose spirit is no deceit.

3 When I kept silent,
my bones wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
4 For day and night
your hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was sapped
as in the heat of summer.
Selah
5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, "I will confess
my transgressions to the LORD "-
and you forgave
the guilt of my sin.
Selah

6 Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to you
while you may be found;
surely when the mighty waters rise,
they will not reach him.
7 You are my hiding place;
you will protect me from trouble
and surround me with songs of deliverance.
Selah

8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you and watch over you.
9 Do not be like the horse or the mule,
which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle
or they will not come to you.
10 Many are the woes of the wicked,
but the LORD's unfailing love
surrounds the man who trusts in him.

11 Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous;
sing, all you who are upright in heart!

Running After You

Your Word is a light unto my path
Your Love guides me through my darkest night
And even though sometimes Your ways
I cannot understand
I’ll never walk away because my future’s
In Your hands

I don’t care what people will say
I’m running after You
I won’t turn back and go their way
Coz I’m running after You
Yeah I’m running after You
I’m running after You
(I will run to You)

I don’t care what people will say
I’m running after You
I won’t turn back and go their way
Coz I’m running after You
Don’t matter what may come my way
I’m running after you
It’s You I’m following today
I’m running after You

I’m running after You

Wednesday

Dumb Antics

Today was a celebration of dumbness in our society. Things got off to a bright start early in the morning, when I forgot to bring my dustcoat for model-making. For those of you who do not understand just how dumb that was, in the visionary words of Dave Barry, "in all due respect, your a looser". Model-making without a dustcoat is the equivalent of fencing without a hammer. So I had to wait for Crawldaddy to emerge before I borrowed his dustcoat, while he spent the rest of the morning with the Grand Master of Dumb Behaviour.

Speaking of dumb behaviour, this brings us to THE memorable event in DD 0402 as yet. Zhen Lin, Tijah, Joseph and I were cleaning up the machine room, when Joseph had a sudden urge to play Kung Fu with the vacuum bag. After punching and kicking it to no avail, he decided to (WARNING: The following description is graphic and may be unsuitable for young children) poke it. He penetrated the bag, leaving a hole in the vacuum bag, debris starting to fly out of the affected area. After a few tense moments of covering up, Tijah and Zhen Lin got together some masking tape to repair the injury. After patching up the hole, we placed the rubbish bin in a "strategic position" such that the masking tape can't be seen from most angles. I proceeded to note this down in my notebook, when Zai came in. "What's that?" he proclaimed, pointing in my general direction, and, to my shock, at the recently patched vacuum bag. I stood there stunned for a few moments, until he walked in my general direction and continued pointing...at my notebook. "Oh, it's a notebook." I replied as nonchalently as I could while the others tried darn hard to keep a straight face.

If you thought that was the end of the dumbness, you couldn't be more wrong. After Phua Tian Soon, we went to move our giant cardboard stuff up to Block M. My coin was already in Block M (in the words of Ayob, "Your ceiling is up there already!") so I help carry Jiaxiong's penknife up. To have a good idea what my class looked like, tune in to Central tomorrow night at 9:30 pm and watch Trigger Happy TV. Watch out for the giant handphone gag. Basically, we looked like we got our stuff from the same shop. Giant penknives, nail clippers, scissors, staplers, coins, vernier calipers, highlighters, mp3 players, keys, etc. all crossing the river that separates Block M from Block R. After placing Jiaxiong's penknife in Block M, we took the lift down, to find the rest of the class taking the lift up. What a magnificant opportunity to do something dumb. Namely, run up the stairs trying to reach the 6th floor faster than the lift. Alas, we were seconds away from achieving our goal.

After that, we returned to Block R, the scene where, in another moment of dumbness, Crawldaddy's classmates kicked a foam ball to bits. In retrospect, we recounted many incidents of dumbness that have enveloped our lives. From stories such as eating Char Siew Bao with the paper still underneath, to misdemeanours with school cupboard locks back in SAS, to playing tennis in the house and smashing the clock, etc.

We then had an argument on who was dumber. I won, naturally :D

You Are 11 Years Old
11

Under 12: You are a kid at heart. You still have an optimistic life view - and you look at the world with awe.
13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.
20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.
30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!
40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.

What Age Do You Act?

Fasting Includes Giving

Isaiah 58

6 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:

to loose the chains of injustice

and untie the cords of the yoke,

to set the oppressed free

and break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry

and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter-

when you see the naked, to clothe him,

and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,

and your healing will quickly appear;

then your righteousness [a] will go before you,

and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;

you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

"If you do away with the yoke of oppression,

with the pointing finger and malicious talk,

10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry

and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,

then your light will rise in the darkness,

and your night will become like the noonday.

11 The LORD will guide you always;

he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land

and will strengthen your frame.

You will be like a well-watered garden,

like a spring whose waters never fail.

12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins

and will raise up the age-old foundations;

you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,

Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

As we fast in this period of Lent, let us also remember to give; give freedom to the oppressed, food to the hungry, money to the poor, salvation to the lost.

GLORY to GOD!

Monday

A Memorable Valentine's Day Even Though What Was Memorable Had Absolutely Nothing to Do With Valentine's Day

It's the FIRST DAY OF THE NEW TERM! Got back my Maths results. Got A* with Cao Yang as expected, but Jiaying surprised us all with her A*. Learnt Determinants. Kinda fun so far, but the calculations can kill, especially for 3rd order determinants and above.

After that, went up to our new Block M. A gust of chilly air greeted us as we stepped out of the lift, and we went to the studio...to find it locked. So we went back to Block R...to find out there was no VI. So spent most of V-day in the workshop doing Zai's birdhouse.

But, of course, before that, lunch. Crawldaddy bought "paper roses" for the girls. I use the term "paper roses" broadly, because honestly it was just a crumpled piece of paper with a piece of wire shoved in it. Speaking of crumpled paper, Crawldaddy and I had our last game of football in Block R. Had a couple of penalties, but I, naturally, with the better aptitude for taking and saving penalties, beat Crawldaddy rather easily. After that, got caught by Hee Kiah, who warned us not to do that ever again. Of course we wouldn't. We won't be in the Block R studio ever again!

After that, it was time for night class with Boey. Had a nice time figuring out the security system in Block M, as well as being locked out of the studio and the block occasionally. Of course, when Mr Boey came, his pass was highly regarded, especially when the toilet was required. We did Hee Kiah during Boey, with Boey giving us some hints for our lighting design. Finished class at 9:30 pm before making our separate ways back home, yours truly reaching home at about 10:15 pm. Then, it's back to work, working on Hee Kiah's lighting design research.

Ah, Industrial Design. The course which never sleeps.

The Great Pretender

Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Pretending that I'm doing well
My need is such; I pretend too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell.

Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
A drift in a world of my own
I play the game; but to my real shame
You've let me to dream all alone.

Too real is this feeling of make believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal.

Oh yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not; you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around.

Too real is this feeling of make believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal

Yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around

Sunday

Had a church today. Quite good preaches in Jesus' Enticement. Then we had practice of the adoration, meaning, naturally, that I lacked the soccer football. Again. How I am that it is going to recover my aptitude like this? In any event, the worship is quite good, even if I cannot hear oneself and the piano continue to trickle. Then, it went with my class to the Great City of the World to eat the lunch. I had fettuccine thus far Mich it had spagettio and rest they had the milk egg to bake a cake. It is sufficient to divide interesting, specially relatively MRT trains. Afterward to be fetched to the house of my uncle to bai nian, we send to Bishan to obtain a certain substance for the school. Slammed by MPH, in order to find this bright book, which I would like to really buy, ‘Speak Well English’ by Tomas Santos, which this post is inaugurated reverently. Never you remember if you actually you do not understand I he spoke for the duration of post, it will intend to be that road.

I must evacuate myself at this clock, I will finish so here.

My Refuge

I take my refuge in the palm of Your hand
I take my comfort in Your perfect plan
I take my sorrow and lay it down at Your feet
I take my refuge where I can be free

In You, Oh Lord
In You, my God
When there's no where to turn
And there's nothing that's true
I find my peace here in You

I take my shelter in the shade of Your wings
I take my pleasure in the hope that You bring
I take my weakness to the foot of the cross
I take my refuge where I can get lost

I worship You, Lord
For all that You are
I stretch out my faith
And lay down my heart
There's no where else
That I'd rather be
Than where there's more You, Lord
And where there's less me

I will worship You with all my heart, my soul
I will worship You with all my mind, my strength.

1 Corinthians 13

7 [Love] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Need You In My Life

I once was lost but You found me and now I'm free
I need Your power to come and change me
Your Spirit lives in me
I wanna dance for all to see

What compares to Your redeeming Love
What can separate me from Your Love

I need You in my life
I'm never letting go
Of all the things You've said
I'm holding on 'cause You promised me that
You'd never leave
You're always by my side
You'll never let me go
So I'm holding on 'cause I know that I need You

Deuteronomy 9

11 At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant.
12 Then the LORD told me, "Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned away quickly from what I commanded them and have made a cast idol for themselves."

O Lord, You are all-knowing, Lord, I pray that this fire in my heart for You will never turn cold, and that I'll never turn away from You and Your commandments.

In Jesus' most precious Name I pray, Amen.

Everything's Changed

You ask me why
Why I’m so different
Why I’m not the same as everybody else
Well something changed
It just happened
When I opened up my heart and let Him in

Jesus came in He came into my life
And I know I never felt so good!

Cause everything’s changed! Everything is different !
Everything’s changed! Everything is different!
Everything’s changed! Everything is different!
Everything’s changed! Everything is different...
Now!

You ask me how
How I can be sure
How I know it’s not just something else for fun
Cause He’s so real
So real in my life
He picked me up and turned my universe around

Everything, everything, everything in my life’s changed
Everything, everything, everything in my life’s different

The Beatitudes

1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,
2 and he began to teach them saying:
3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

Today was an exceptionally blessed day for me. I thought I had it good when I went back to the Village to have a look around, have some fun at Youjun's house, but boy wasn't I prepared for what was about to happen.

My house was blessed with the presence of my cousin Jonathan, who was armed with the Word of God in his hand. We had a scintillating discussion after the reunion dinner, the 3 youths, me, Jonathan, and Joshua, as well as my uncles and aunties, and we debated over the Word of God. Tonight, the Spirit of the Living God touched our hearts through the words of Jonathan, and he reignited the fire of the Holy Spirit in me. Praise God for His wonderful work in us, now and is to come. Now I just got to get a pocket notebook to write some notes...

Jonathan talked about something important; with knowledge comes great responsibility. We who hear and know the Word of God have a responsibility to share what we have learnt for the encouragement and building up of others. May I and all who have heard God's Word from the mouth of Jonathan never forget this important lesson today.

Lord, may I be humble to Your Will, may I mourn with Your people, and with You, and may I have the self-control and the humility to give all the Glory back to You...

In the mighty Name of Jesus...Amen.

Monday

I'm BACK!!!

After yet another scare with my computer, I'm finally back online again. In addition, the killer week has passed and life is pretty much back to normal. Pretty much in the sense that it is now my term break, so I have a week to slack and basically do all the Chinese New Year stuff. Speaking of Chinese New Year, and to celebrate the end of the killer week, we have a...

FLASHBACK:

The following column was written for the Saints Times, a St. Andrew's School publication, in 2003. Needless to say, it was never published.

Uncle from the West Distributes Vegetables
By Alvin Chee, 4SE

Let me begin by wishing all of you a happy Chinese New Year. In other words, I wish your New Year will be very happy and very Chinese. (Note: I’m not being racist – I’m just being lame)

Yes, Chinese New Year fever is prevalent throughout most of Asia, most notably in China, where they will celebrate this year by following the time-honoured tradition of playing football with Brazil. Is that all, you ask. Far from it. They will also be fervently watching their national basketball superstar Yao Ming, who plays for the Houston Rockets, attempt to speak English.

But we are not in China. No, we are in a technologically advanced civilization which embraces the fast-paced changing environment – Saint Andrew’s School. No, seriously, what I’m trying to say is that we celebrate Chinese New Year differently. For example, 4SA honours Chinese New Year by engulfing their notice board in a sea of red, which is different from 4SE, which instead honours “John” (name changed for legal reasons) by engulfing our notice board in a sea of black. (Note: I am not being racist. I repeat, I am not being racist.)(Note to “John”: What you have just read is just a figment of your imagination. It does not exist. Now, repeat after me, “I will not kill Alvin Chee”, good boy)

But let us look at the bigger picture. How do Singaporeans celebrate Chinese New Year? From my 15 years of experience, the process goes something like this: A youth/boy/infant/foetus holds two oranges, or two orange-coloured tennis balls, and goes to a man/elderly man/very elderly man/very elderly man who coughs out blood/tombstone, and says in a loud nasal voice, “Kong See Fa Chai”, and receives a red packet, also known as a “Red Packet”, which contains money, and occasionally used tissue paper. “Kong See Fa Chai” literally means “Uncle from the West Distributes Vegetables”. Frankly, I have absolutely no idea what the connection between Chinese New Year and uncles distributing vegetables is. I attempted to do some research, and found a good website: http://www.kongseefachai.com, which explains it as such: “The page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.”

Chinese New Year is also commonly known as Lunar New Year, which I find confusing, as it gives the impression that we celebrate a new year every 27 days, which, from a student’s point of view, is very scary. Can YOU handle a major exam every 27 days?

I really wish to continue, but I am running out of space and time. No, not like I am exploring the outer limits of space and time or anything like that. I mean I have got no more space to write and no more time to do my homework. To end off, I would like to mention that since this is a school publication, I would have to end off in a default style if this article is ever going to see print, so here goes: Overall, the trip was very memorable and educational and I learnt a lot and had a lot of fun.
