Sunday

One of those days...

You ever had one of those days? Those days that just never work out for you? Well I just had one today.

First thing in the morning, woke up late...again. Don't know just what is the problem with Sunday mornings...so we reached church late again. Anyway, after service, was preparing to go up and see Mich's new bass...so I was going to ask for permission from my parents, but they were chatting away and I didn't get a chance to say anything...so when I saw Mich going up with the black bass case, I just took my chances and followed along with Yiwei. I was already upstairs, I was literally metres away from the door, then I decided I'd better ask permission anyway because me + bass = not letting go for a long time. So I went downstairs, and of all things bumped into my father. "What are you doing here, let's go, we're going now." "NOW?" "Yes, quick call your mummy..." In my heart I was like 'DARN' as I followed my family back to the car. Something made me look over my shoulder as I was walking back. Mich was looking at me go. There was this expression in her face I can't quite place. I was speechless. Literally, there was a lump in my throat. Even now I can't really describe what I felt. Whatever it was, it didn't feel good.

So anyway, followed my family to Ikea for breakfast. Just had a soup, didn't have much mood for anything else. At St. Matt's, tried loosening up with the electric guit and the bass and the football. Neither really worked. In fact the bass made me feel kinda worse. Gutted, really. Had lunch while it poured. When the rain went down, we made our way to NUS. Then it started to pour again. Just changed anyway. The rain didn't stop. Finally my parents came to pick me up. Went to Jurong to play table tennis. They ran out of bats. So we just went down for a look. It was packed. I was gutted. So we made our way back home. Then...of all things...IT STOPPED RAINING!!! By then I had resigned myself to the notion that it was just one of those days...

Now getting ready to go for dinner at Jeffrey's place. Frankly, I can't think of a single thing to do there, especially since Matt has booked in...as Ilango so eloquently put it...today really sian diao...

Thursday

The Repose of Chi Wing Lo

Yesterday I went for this design talk by this bloke Chi Wing Lo. It was at this NAFA place. So, I planned to meet up with Crawldaddy at Bugis MRT at 1715 hrs, so, after making the necessary calculations, I left the house at 1645 hrs. After getting off 13, I went down the Potong Pasir MRT station...to see the train moving off. Great, so there was delayed for 5 minutes. Finally, the bus came, got off at Dhoby Ghaut, rushed to the NSL area...to see the train moving off. Fantastic, so was delayed there for another 4 minutes. Got off at City Hall to go towards Bugis on the EWL...and...another NSL train arrived to further pack the train. Brilliant...fortunately, reached there...not TOO late, only 1720 hrs. So off we set towards NAFA, and in the drizzle, took some daring turns and interesting navigation. After 10 minutes...we finally found...Bugis MRT station. Well, at least we knew where NOT to walk this time...and we finally arrived at NAFA Theatre. From then on, it was barrage after barrage of phone calls. "Where is the place ah?" "HERE...on Bencoolen Street...next to Burlington Square...B-U-R-lington...it's...it's opposite the bus stop...OPPOSITE THE STOP SIGN...blah blah blah..." We finally seated ourselves next to the teachers, who were looking with interest at my mp3 player. Not the songs, mind you, they were not really interested in Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder...Anyway, the talk finally started. Mr Giorghetti, some big shot with a real thick Italian accent, started us off with an introduction. "Eet eess mai gchkreteste pleashur too shpick heer...blah blah blah..." All I could comprehend was he was saying something about Scolari not being in design. I knew that, he's the Portugal coach, everybody knows that...So anyway, after that, Mr Chi finally took to the stage. Amazingly, we couldn't comprehend him either. "The ambivalent exactitude of which the 'repose' of the imagination of darkness to darkness and light to light, brings about the perfect house of water in the wheat field, involving the 'repose' of mergence of wood and electronic technology from the manifestation of aluminium, resulting in...'repose'." It didn't help that he was speaking at the same speed of a snail, while the slides faded in...then faded out...faded in...then faded out...Crawldaddy knocked off for like 80% of the talk, while I amazingly kept awake throughout the whole thing, perhaps only because I was TRYING to comprehend what in world he was trying to say. And also trying not to look at the slides.

Monday

Yesterday was...OK...

Choir was good, reception was better than I expected. But had to eat my medicine in the middle of service :( Didn't like that one bit. Then, after service, prepared for breakfast with Mich and Yiwei, but, lo and behold, found out from my parents that I had to go down to SMC myself :(:( So there went breakfast, just took a quick bite from church then rushed to the MRT station. Got a call from Yiwei in the train. Felt really really bad, just left them there like that...well, what to do, what's done is done. Anyway, reached SMC on the dot, quickly rushed behind the piano for a quick prayer with the band, then off we went. Surprisingly, the one-handed pianist didn't do too badly...all by God's grace, that the whole congregation and the band managed to worship together in spirit and in truth. After that, my father brought me down to the Creative sale, got me an mp3 player...cost a bomb, and I didn't even ask for it...but that's my father, go figure...but really grateful for it anyway...Then it was configuring on my computer from then on, finally got it working...this morning.

Well, hope the movie thing works out OK, so tt I won't feel so bad leaving Mich and Yiwei there yesterday...

My Sweet Lady

Lady, are you crying, do the tears belong to me
Did you think our time together was all gone
Lady, you've been dreaming, I'm as close as I can be
And I swear to you our time has just begun

Close your eyes and rest your weary mind
I promise I will stay right here beside you
Today our lives were joined, became entwined
I wish that you could know how much I love you

Lady, are you happy, do you feel the way I do
Are there meanings that you've never seen before
Lady, my sweet lady, I just can't believe it's true
And it's like I've never, ever loved before

Lady, are you crying, do the tears belong to me
Did you think our time together was all gone
Lady, my sweet lady, I'm as close as I can be
And I swear to you our time has just begun

If you were wondering how I voted, these are my votes:

Miss of the Year

Alvin Chee vs YE @ COGS Field

Point blank in front of the goal, a perfect cross from my right, and an airshot. Find me a better miss than this.

Save of the Year

Simon Chow vs Alvin Chee @ St. Matthew’s Church Joy Room

Probably one of the best penalty saves I have ever seen. He was standing at his left post, preparing to dive to his right. I shot straight to the left post. He had already started to dive to his right. Then, just as the ball was going in, he stretched out his left hand and pulled his upper body to his left. A touch and the ball rolled harmlessly away from goal, while he remained slumped at his right post.

Goal of the Year

Tombro O’Brian @ Tanjong Pagar Street Soccer Court

A volley into the top corner on his debut. What more can you ask?

Player of the Year

Chol Jun

Single-handedly tore SAJC to bits in the 'A' div finals. Pure class on a cool head.

Goalkeeper of the Year

Simon Chow

Fending off the challenges from the perenially impressive Ilango and new signing Deron, Simon has held his own, and has pulled off his fair share of impressive saves. Although technically not as good as either Ilango or Deron, his number of appearances do it for me.

Match of the Year

SAS vs ACS(I) (Police Cup)

SAS snatching the 'C' div crown from ACS(I) with a resounding 10:7 performance. Combine that with the atmosphere created by the blue-and-whites, and you've got a real contender for Match of the Year.

Song of the Year

Agnus Dei - Michael W. Smith

Although some may disagree, I think this is the most uplifting song I've ever heard. Was my personal defining moment during Festival Of Praise, and even just practising it with the SMC Band affirmed just how beautiful this song is.

Busiest Person of the Year

Michelle Cheam

Take a VJC student, throw in a triple Olympic gold winning school choir member (held in Bremen, mind you), throw in piano and bass playing and choir duties for church, add in piano AND clarinet exams, add in founding member of church acapella group, as well as Philharmonic Winds, Singapore Youth Orchestra, and a certain Christmas Celebration In Singapore, and you start to wonder how in the world she finds time for Rugby training.

Pianist of the Year

Pheobe Kwan

When someone starts playing along to someone who just starts singing impromptu in perfect pitch and chording, you start to wonder whether you actually know how to play a piano.

Guitarist of the Year

Wong Shaohui

What can I say? Repertoire, skill, and a certain Stairway solo. Not forgetting of course the violin bow and the crazy electric guitar version of 'Majulah Singapura'. This guy is one of the best.

Drummer of the Year

Simon Chow

The steadiest beat in SMC as well as the coolest roll for Free, his consistency once again does it for me.

Bassist of the Year

Michelle Cheam

This gal can play some riffs. The best thing? She makes them up as she goes. Creativity and skill all rolled into one.

Banjo-Picker of the Year

Alvin Chee

What can I say? I'm the only one in town. Unless some people want to challenge my monopoly in this category, I dare say I'll be winning this one for a long time...

Freedom for my Finger
Another Fuzzy Green Grass Parody

Freedom for my finger makes me happy
Poking at the pins can make me cry
Finger without bandage looks so lovely
But I always have to keep it dry

If I had a day that I could give you
I’d give to you a day just like today
If I had a song that I could sing for you
I’d sing a song to make you feel this way

Freedom for my finger makes me happy
Poking at the pins can make me cry
Finger without bandage looks so lovely
But I always have to keep it dry

If I had a tale that I could tell you
I’d tell a tale sure to make you smile
If I had a wish that I could wish for you
I’d make a wish for fingers all the while

Freedom for my finger makes me happy
Poking at the pins can make me cry
Finger without bandage looks so lovely
But I always have to keep it dry
Even when I bathe it must be dry
Pins inside my fingers...

You are Sir Bedevere! Wise and creative, you are able to counsel others as well as come up with some really ingenious plans of attack...sort of.

Write Your Name Across My Heart

I feel so thankful when I think of You,
So I’m on my knees, it’s the best I can do.
I say Your name, and You feel so close.
Walls have crumbled from my body and soul.

Chorus:
Write Your name across my heart,
I want the world to know that I am Yours forever.
And I will wear it like a shining star.
Write Your name across my heart.

For You, my life is an open door,
And everything that I have is Yours.
I can’t repay what You’ve done for me,
But my love for You has a lifetime guarantee.

Bridge:
And all my thoughts,
And all I do,
And all I say,
I belong to You with every breath I take.

Thursday

Today was the usual holiday. Wake up too early, slack at home until evening, then go to dinner with cousin(s). But today was different, went to the Singapore Motorshow 2004. First and foremost, no VW :( But instead there was...X-BOX!!! Played FIFA 2005. GOOD gameplay!!! But conceded a dumb goal. And my computer is crappy. So, useless hoping for the game anyway :(

Are You Afraid to Die

Are you a stranger to God
Carried away with your pride
Tell me sinner
Do you ever stop and think
Are you afraid to die

Are you afraid
Are you unsaved
Are you afraid to die

Call on Him while he is near
Moments are swift passing by
Will you seek Him
While He stile may be found
Are you afraid to die

Are you afraid
Are you unsaved
Are you afraid to die

Are you too wicked to cry
Would you to Gods' bosom fly
Soon He's comin'
Like a theif in the night
Are you afraid to die

Are you afraid
Are you unsaved
Are you afraid to die

Are you afraid
Are you unsaved
Are you afraid to die

Monday

A BIG THANK YOU goes out to all who have helped me in one way or another regarding my fractured finger. Especially for those who prayed for me, I owe you guys a million! :D

For those of you guys still in the dark, I fractured my left pinky playing football at COGS yesterday. Because of that, I pushed myself upfield and tried preventing any sort of contact with my hands. Rediscovered my 'Rooneyesque' touch at Tanjong Pagar with the SMC guys, slamming shots into the goal. So, yet again, consistency is my problem. Anyway, I didn't get much of the limelight, due to the emergence of a young talent that is taking the SMFC by storm...Tombro O' Brian! Scored a brilliant volley among other spectacular goals, things look bright for the SMFC's future. Anyway after the game, Hari had a look at my hand and suggested I see a doctor. The chinese doctors were all closed, so we went to Mount Alvernia to have an X-ray. I really thank God we went there, because it was not just a dislocation, it was a fracture.

So anyway, we decided to have a day surgery. Which leads to the joke of the year...they sent a wheelchair. I was like..."It's a HAND injury..." and they were like "Never mind just sit down...". I even had a bed in a ward. Spent like a total of an hour in that ward...Before AND after the surgery...Anyway, after a while I was wheeled into the operating theatre. After numbing my hand, the surgeon repositioned my finger, then he proceeded to...and I am not making this up...he proceeded to DRILL 2 STICKS INTO MY BONES. Thank goodness I could not feel a thing...Finally, got the medication and made our way back home.

Today was kinda boring. After taking medication, watched 2 DVDs, 'O Brother, Where Art Thou' and 'Ocean's Eleven', before doing some 3D work, a retry of my Volkswagen.

Goalkeeping Coach? Maybe...:p

Friday

Daniel Prayed

I read about a man one day
He wasted not his time away
He prayed to God
Every morning, noon and night

He cared not for the things avail
But trusted One who never fails
Oh Daniel prayed
Every morning, noon and night

Chorus:
Oh, Daniel served his living God
While upon this earth he trod
He prayed to God every morning, noon and night
He cared not for the King's decree
But trusted God to set him free
He prayed to God every morning, noon and night

They locked him in the lion's den
Because he would not honor men
But he prayed to God
Every morning, noon and night

The jaws were locked, it made him shout
And God soon brought him safely out
Oh, Daniel prayed
Every morning, noon and night

Now brother let us watch and pray
Like Daniel did from day to day
He prayed to God
Every morning, noon and night

We too can gladly dare and do
And pray to God, He'll see us through
Oh, Daniel prayed
Every morning, noon and night

Thursday

Day of Reunion

Officially Day 4 of the Robotics Training, did some external sensor to RCX programming, then mini-sumobot. A bit of C Programming, but never seriously understood what was happening there...

The challenge has caught on, Jotham the last one to get "enlightened"...he got 5 correct even though he did not know how he did it. Now only team Freedom and Andrew Hooon don't know the secret.

Anyway, on the way home in the bus, was contacted by Crawldaddy, and I had a talk with Sniper the Gunner, who was jamming at his house. It's been a long time since I heard his voice...and as if that was not coincidental enough, I bumped into Yaofeng at Potong Pasir MRT. Did a bit of catching up, found out Suresh made the SAJC football team (1st team). Not that I was very surprised...

Tuesday

Day 2 of Robotics Training:

After yesterday's insomnia-curing talk, today we finally got down to practical stuff. Made a cool lightweight line-tracing robot, along with an ergonomic controller. Lunch at SIM, a nice wok of fried rice, before finally going back for more robot stuff. Finally, finished the relay, all 4 teams finishing their line-tracing in succession using Infra-red sensors. A successful end to a successful day.

(Oh, and by the way, Jing Wei and Edwin have entered Day 1 of the Correct is Correct, Wrong is Wrong challenge...)
